Brian Flores Hired In Pittsburgh: Then And Now

Brian Flores is out as the head coach of the Miami Dolphins in a shock move by the organization. Flores was head coach in Miami for three seasons and finished with a record of 24-25. Not a great record but what made his firing surprising is that in the last two seasons he finished with a winning record (10-6 and 9-8).

Many thought that Brian Flores would be quick to get another head coaching position. Chicago, New Orleans, New York, and many more teams were all looking for a new man and Flores would have been high on everyone’s list. Flores however, chose to sue the NFL over alleged racial discrimination in the hiring process after a leaked text message surfaced. Many thought his chances would be ruined at a position in the NFL for the near future.

It wasn’t a head coaching position but the Pittsburgh Steelers decided to hire Brian Flores as a Senior Defensive Assistant and Linebackers coach. A very shrewd move by the organization that now not only boasts one of the best defenses in the league (most of the time) but also have a defensive-minded head coach, a new defensive coordinator in Teryl Austin, and a man who transformed the Miami defense into one of the best in the league.

Brian Flores In The NFL

Brian Flores served as an assistant coach with the New England Patriots from 2008-to 2018. During his time in New England, he served in just about every coaching position available. Defensive assistant, safeties coach, and linebackers coach. In his final season, he was the defensive play-caller as the Patriots won Super Bowl LIII against the high-flying Los Angeles Rams offense and only conceded three points.

Flores served on the defensive side of the ball during his entire career with the Patriots and earned four Super Bowl victories with them.

Brian Flores: Head Coach

After beginning his coaching career with the New England Patriots in 2008 he moved to their rivals the Dolphins in 2019. Flores took over in Miami after they had endured two losing seasons in a row. 6-10 in 2017 and 7-9 in 2018. Flores took over from Adam Gase, who despite taking the Dolphins to the playoffs in 2016 had lost the support of the fans and the organization.

Flores inherited the team left behind by Gase and could only muster together a record of 5-11 in 2019. Once he had a handle on the team however he would lead the team to two winning seasons in a row and narrowly miss out on the playoffs in both seasons.

The biggest improvement that Brian Flores made was on the defensive side of the ball. In 2019, the Miami Dolphins allowed more points than any other team in the NFL. In 2020, he transformed the defense and there were only five teams that allowed fewer points per game than the Dolphins.

A huge turnaround and one that would be welcome in Steel City.

Lawsuit Against The NFL

As previously alluded to, Brian Flores is currently in the middle of a lawsuit against the NFL. On February 1st, 2022, Flores filed a class-action lawsuit against the NFL, New York Giants, Miami Dolphins, and Miami Dolphins organizations. In his lawsuit, he has alleged racial discrimination. According to media reports and text messages from Bill Belichick, Flores claims that the Giants hired Daboll as their new head coach before they interviewed any minority candidates.

Flores also accused John Elway and the Denver Broncos of another sham interview in 2019. Claiming that he arrived an hour late and was hungover. Elway responded stating that Broncos officials attended the meeting at the only time that suited Flores and they have detailed notes showing their interest in hiring him.

Concerning the Dolphins organization, Flores claims that owner Stephen Ross offered him 100,000 dollars to lose games. All to gain a higher position in the NFL draft. On top of that, he alleges that he was instructed to tamper with a Quarterback before free agency. The quarterback is believed to be Tom Brady.

Flores is seeking damages and more importantly, he is looking for changes to be made to the hiring process.

Steelers And Flores

Pittsburgh vastly improved its coaching team with the hiring of Brian Flores. After Keith Butler decided to retire Teryl Austin was promoted to the defensive coordinator position. Brian Flores will likely assist in the defensive playcalling.

I am excited about Brian Flores joining our coaching staff given his history of developing and teaching defensive players during his time in the NFL. Brian’s resume speaks for itself, and I look forward to him adding his expertise to help our team.

One person in particular who will be looking forward to Flores starting is linebacker Devin Bush. Bush has struggled since his ACL injury and will be hoping for an improvement under his new coach.

After being unable to stop the high-flying Kansas City offense in the 2021 playoffs, the Steelers will be hoping that the addition of Brian Flores can help. Pittsburgh will hope to get the team back to winning playoff games and not just participating.
